چکیده

Increasing multimedia applications such as teleconferencing and video-on-demand require the Internet to effectively provide high-performance multicast support. One of the promising solutions for multicasting is called end-system multicasting, in which the multicasting is conducted either at the end systems or at a dedicated Multicast Service Node (MSN). A MSN is responsible for a number of end systems. For performance purposes, MSN is a promising approach. Therefore, it is critical to design the architecture of MSN in general, and the queuing and scheduling on MSN in particular, such that it provides efficient multicast support. Previous work on multicast queuing and scheduling have implicitly assumed that multicasting is done at the core routers, a situation which is unlikely to happen in practice. In this paper, we designed a high-performance queuing scheme for MSNs to support both unicast and multicast and to achieve high link utilization and high switch throughput with a reasonable cost. The main approach is to use per-vector queueing on-demand at the ingress of the MSN. To verify the above design, simulation results were provided and analyzed. The results from this paper can be used as a part of the guidelines for building next generation multicast switches.

Integrated Queuing and Scheduling for Unicast and Multicast Traffic in Input-Queued Packet Switches

This paper presents the integrated queuing and scheduling for an N × N input-queued packet switch that efficiently supports both unicast and multicast traffic. Each input port maintains two sets of queues each for unicast and multicast traffic. For unicast traffic, we deploy the wellknown virtual output queuing scheme. For multicast traffic, we propose a novel queuing scheme in which a small nu...

Integration of Unicast and Multicast Scheduling in Input-Queued Packet Switches with High Scalability

This paper focuses on the scalability problems for high-speed switches, and presents an integrated scheduling algorithm that supports unicast and multicast traffic efficiently in input-queued packet switches. Considering the tradeoff balancing complexity and performance, the proposed integrated algorithm performs without iteration, and reduces the scheduling overhead to O(N) with a two-phase (r...

System-level Exploration of Queuing Management Schemes for Input Queue Packet Switches

In high-performance packet switches, data queuing has to allow real-time memory (de)allocation, buffering, retrieving, and forwarding of incoming packets. Its implementation must be highly optimized to combine high speed, low power, large data storage, and high memory bandwidth. In this paper, such data queuing is used as a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of a new system-level explo...

Efficient Multicast Support in High-Speed Packet Switches

The tremendous growth of the Internet coupled with newly emerging applications has created a vital need for multicast traffic support by backbone routers and ATM switches. Considerable research work has been done on Input Queued (IQ) switches to handle multicast traffic flows. Unfortunately, all previously proposed solutions were of no practical value because they either lack performance or wer...
